Companies whose CEOs post more frequently on LinkedIn experience higher employee attrition in the following twelve months.

Methodology

One hundred and eighty-nine organizations with publicly listed CEOs were selected from a sample frame constructed by the Institute's research staff using LinkedIn's public profile pages. CEO post frequency was tracked monthly for twelve months using manual observation by two research associates who rotated every eight weeks. Attrition data was sourced from each organization's annual disclosure, quarterly HR report, or, in thirteen cases, from a senior employee willing to characterize departures as 'substantial.'

Funding disclosure: Funded by the Institute's Leadership Behavior Research Fund, established by a gift from a former CEO whose LinkedIn account had been deactivated at the time of the study.
